What is a march through time?
A SHOW | AN EXHIBITION | A SALON | AN EXPERIENCE
THE VISION
A March Through Time (AMTT) is rooted in the belief that time is neither linear nor flat— it’s cyclical. Thus, our collective paths are holistically interconnected. Our stories fold back in memory, passing through our present consciousness to mold our future lineages. By designing a contemporary exhibition in a cyclical ethos, we get to explore the dimensionality of our joined existence — focusing not on the beginning or end but rather an all-encompassing journey.
Our goal is simple — Honor the Genius of our Past - Illuminate the Brilliance of our Present - Manifest our Collective Future
ARTIST STATEMENT
In 2016, I had a curious idea—what if I could create moving portraits of mostly unsung beacons of American exceptionalism? I envisioned an environment not only to commune with hidden histories, symbolic stories, and astronomical accomplishments but also to understand the pride of aspiration—the notion of something built much greater than what others confine us to.
The show is meant to embody our mark on categories of everyday culture. I invite audiences to reflect on the full scope of our shared human experience by investigating their place in the fabric of time.
This will be my first solo show and most important work to date. Thank you for playing even a small part in this journey. I do not take your support for granted.
Sincerely,
-George McCalman
THE DESIGN
Bold, Declarative, and Seamless, these are the defining characteristics in the making of AMTT. Each component was developed at a cellular level with the intention of transformation—a subtle but undeniable thread of history woven through every detail.
Modular in form and construction, the show will adapt to each city it travels to, maintaining its core components while presenting new information specific to relevant pioneers in its host city. The architectural firm ToyaStudio is collaborating with McCalman.Co on the engineering and rendering of the sets — prioritizing craft, beauty, and interactive flow.
THE MANDATE
The show was built conceptually as an Educational Salon, not to be observed passively but to engage actively. We want each attendee to walk away having felt deeply but also plotting what to do next with their time.
We’ve designed a manifesto for each patron to take with them as a look back on the experience and a guide for what’s ahead— an artifact for action in their decision-making.
Together we have the power to impact our collective human experience. We want everyone to leave this show asking yourself “what could I do more?” and being prepared to do it.
LOCATION AND TIME
AMTT is designed as a traveling showcase through 10 prominent cities across the United States. The inaugural show is set to launch in spring 2025 in the heart of San Francisco, CA.
The great migration marked the beginning of a long legacy of accomplishments and breakthroughs for many Americans. San Francisco, with its rich tapestry of achievements, often overlooked, is the perfect place to begin our journey.
THE PARTNERS
A March Through Time will foster a series of illuminating programs by collaborating with contemporary pioneers across cultural, historical, and social impact professions.
Among the participating luminaries thus far are: Emil Wilbekin (Vibe, Native Son), Tricia Hersey (The Nap Ministry), Marvin K. White (Glide Memorial), Natalie Baszile (Queen Sugar), and Bryant Terry (Black Food).
